Rules for the XBC 2020 Short Story Competition

The Book Circle's first-ever formal competition, on the short story. 

  1. The Judge is J David Simons the novelist and short story writer.
     

  2. Word limit: from 6 (SIX) to 3,000 words. Word count should appear at the bottom of the first page of each manuscript.
     

  3. Entries must be in English, unpublished (in print, online or by any other means), on any subject and solely own work.
     

  4. Entries must be anonymous, so no identifying marks on the manuscript, please.
     

  5. Entries should be submitted double-spaced, in Times/Georgia/Baskerville 12-point type, either in Word or as a PDF. Eventual presentation of prize-winners on the Book Circle website will be to the Committee’s format.
     

  6. Entries to be submitted as email attachments to christopher@oldolivepress.com  with 'XBC Competition Entry' in the subject heading. Author’s name should appear solely on the accompanying email, not in the manuscript itself.
     

  7. The competition is free but limited to Book Circle members. Annual Book Circle membership fee for 2020 is 10€. Instructions on how to pay the fee will be posted on the Book Circle website before the closing date.
     

  8. Closing date: All entries must be received by midnight on 31 December 2020. The winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd plus commended) will be announced on 2 February 2021 at the Annual General Meeting of the Xabia Book Circle, together with the Judge’s comments and a reading of the winning short stories.
     

  9. Prizes: 1st prize: 100€. 2nd and 3rd prizes: wine or cava.
     

  10. All entrants must agree to have their stories published on the Book Circle website.
